Work-related car expenses – what can you claim?

Do you know what you are allowed to claim when you use your car for work?

Check out a few frequently asked questions and answers here.

Q: I need to travel multiple times between work and home daily. Can I make a claim?

A: No, travels between work and home (or vice versa) are considered private travel and therefore you cannot make any claim.

Q: I use my car to do trips between workplaces. Can I claim anything?

A: You can claim deductions if you use your car to travel between two workplaces. This includes if you are traveling from one job to another (if you have 2 jobs).

Q: I use my car to run errands daily to pick up the mail for the office. Can I claim anything?

A: Picking up mail is classed as normal minor work-related tasks and unfortunately you are unable to make any deductions on this.

Q: I need to carry bulky tools in my car. Can I claim anything?

A: If your employer requires you to use the tools for work and has provided you with a secure storage area at work, but you choose to carry them with you in your car instead, then you cannot claim any deduction.

Q: I paid for petrol for the car and my employer reimbursed me the exact amount. What can I claim?

A: You cannot claim anything in your tax return because your employer has reimbursed you in full and therefore there are no out-of-pocket expenses from you.
